Campus Sustainability

Lewis and Clark is always looking for ways to go green on campus. There are just a few of the initiatives we have implemented so far.

Green Pass Program
In order to reduce emissions from faculty, staff and student commuters, the Lewis and Clark Office of Sustainability instituted the Green Pass program. The program offers incentives to participants who take alternative transportation including bus, passive transport, or carpool. Learn more under "Get Involved."

Occupancy Sensors
The college has installed occupancy sensors in all campus buildings so that if a student or employee forgets to turn off a light when they leave a room, the lights automatically go off to save electricity.

Lighting Retrofit
Lewis and Clark has updated the lighting in all campus buildings to higher efficiency models, which save significant amounts of energy per year.

Solar
The college has installed several solar thermal panels on top of campus buildings, which provide hot water for sinks and showers, and some solar photovoltaic panels provide small amounts of electricity to campus. There are plans to install more of these panels in the future.

Dining Services
Dining Services on campus composts food scraps from the kitchen, provides locally harvested food for meals, and uses biodegradable dining wear.

Recycling
Lewis and Clark provides recycling containers for all offices and classrooms as well as in hallways throughout campus, diverting a significant portion of waste from entering a landfill. In addition, Lewis and Clark participates in Recyclemania, a national recycling competition, each year.
